Start-up non-toxic paint company wins California state WRAP recycling award
Earth Safe Finishes, a non-toxic paint and finishes company based in Southern California, earned a spot as one of the 2010 CalRecycle Waste Reduction Program winners.
The company, founded by entrepreneur and owner Nancy Burkhart and daughter Jessica Arellano, was created out of a need to provide consumers, including artists and do-it-yourself home owners and craftspeople, with an environmentally safe, toxin-free product line of paints, stains and finishes. The company also recently introduced a non-toxic, eco-safe resin and glue called Eco-Epoxy for use in home construction and artistic endeavors.
The award, otherwise known as WRAP, supports California businesses that have incorporated waste reduction, reuse, recycling and buying recycled into their daily business activities. The WRAP award honors businesses that conserve scarce natural resources and positively influence the way business is done in California to protect the environment, according to Kim Oakley of the California Department of Resources, Recycling and Recovery.
According to Oakley, WRAP winners collectively reported diverting more than 2 million tons of waste from landfills, and contributed to more than $190 million in cost savings.
Winners were evaluated individually, based upon its own accomplishments, according to Oakley.
Burkhart, whose company has received a number of state and federal awards in 2010, was thrilled to be honored with a California state government award which supports the environment.
“The Cal Recycle WRAP award symbolizes what Earth Safe Finishes is about at its core -- recycle, reuse, renew -- ” says Burkhart. “This award helps confirm the importance of conserving our natural resources and making the most of the natural resources available to us in this state without exploiting them.”
WRAP winners are authorized to use the WRAP winner logo with their products, advertising and business websites in order to publicize waste reduction efforts.
Burkhart said she, as a business owner, is encouraged by the state’s efforts through the WRAP award to support “green” businesses such as Earth Safe Finishes.
“The state government’s support of environmentally-minded companies that are making the effort to conserve and recycle California’s precious natural resources is essential to the growth of the state’s “green” economy,” says Burkhart. “The WRAP award is an outstanding example of that.”
