Colorants

There are 24 Earth Safe Finishes Colorants. Each is a liquid, packaged in a dropper
bottle for fine control. Gently shake the bottle to mix well before using in any of the
following recipes. The Colorants are liquid pigments that act like dyes.

Ink for rubber-stamping on paper
Moisten a dry rubber-stamp pad with Earth Safe Finishes Extender. Drip Colorant on
the wet pad until the surface is evenly colored. Ink the stamp with the Colorant mixture
and press firmly on a paper surface. Apply additional Extender and Colorant, as needed.

Alcohol ink
Pour a small amount of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol in a small bottle. Add Colorant, a
drop at a time, until the desired saturation is achieved. Use in place of alcohol inks in
your favorite technique
.
Inks in a refillable marker
Use an ink syringe to fill an empty (refillable) marker with your choice of Colorant.
Store the marker with the tip up, rather than down.

Stencil Cream for paper
Spray a small amount of fragrance-free shaving cream on a paper plate. Add Colorant,
one drop at a time, until the desired color intensity is achieved. Colors will dry slightly
darker than in the cream mixture. Smooth the cream through the holes in a stencil with a
foam brush or apply with a stencil brush.

Screen-printing ink for paper
Spray a small amount of fragrance-free shaving cream on a paper plate. Add Colorant
and a few drops of water to create a thinned cream, perfect for applying through a silk
screen.

Paint for Paper
Pour ! cup water in a small (recycled) plastic cup or tub. Add Colorant, one drop at a
time, until the desired color intensity is achieved. Mix a pinch or two of Ultra Thick
thickening crystals into the cup and allow the mixture to thicken for several minutes. If it
is not thick enough, add another pinch of Ultra Thick. If the mixture is too thick, add a
few drops of water and mix thoroughly.

Colorants + Fabric Magic

Immersion Dye
Make your own dye bath for immersion techniques with 1 tablespoon FabricMagic, 1
cup water, and drops of Colorant until the desired color intensity is achieved. Immerse
the fabric or fiber in the dye mixture. The fabric instantly absorbs color. Dip and squeeze
out excess, while wearing rubber gloves; lay flat to dry. Once the fiber is dry, heat-set
with a hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours, it is hand washable and machine washable.

Spray-on Dye
Mix 1 tablespoon FabricMagic, 1 cup water, and Colorant. Place in a spray-pump
bottle. Apply on fabric, using your favorite spray-on technique. Allow the fabric to air
dry, and heat-set with a hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours, it is hand washable and
machine washable.

Fabric markers
Mix a few drops of FabricMagic with your choice of Colorant in a recycled container.
Use an ink syringe to fill an empty (refillable) marker with the mixture. Store the marker
with the tip up, rather than down.

Stencil cream for Fabric
Spray a small amount of fragrance-free shaving cream on a paper plate. Mix several
drops of FabricMagic and Colorant into the cream to achieve the desired color
intensity. Colors will dry slightly darker than the shaving cream mixture. Allow the fabric
to air dry, and heat-set with a hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours it is hand washable
and machine washable.

Screen-printing ink for fabric
Mix a small amount of fragrance-free shaving cream and several drops of water on a
paper plate, add several drops of FabricMagic and Colorant to achieve the desired
color intensity. Apply through the silk screen with a squeegee. Colors will dry slightly
darker than the shaving cream mixture. Allow the fabric to air dry, and heat-set with a
hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours, it is hand washable and machine washable.

Stroke-on Fabric paint
Stroke-on fabric paint is easy to make with Colorant, FabricMagic, water, and Ultra
Thick thickener crystals. Pour ! cup water into a small paper or plastic cup. Mix "
teaspoon  FabricMagic, and several drops of Colorant in the water. Add a pinch of
thickener crystals to the water mixture and stir thoroughly. Allow the mixture to thicken
for several minutes, and apply the paint on fabric with a brush. Allow the fabric to air
dry, and heat-set with a hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours, it is hand washable and
machine washable.

Tackifier

As a Stencil Adhesive
Apply Tackifier on the wrong side of a stencil with a sponge brush, sponge roller, or
paper towel. Allow to dry until clear. The adhesive will grip the fabric and prevent stencil
cream from wicking underneath and blurring the image. Allow the fabric to air dry, and
heat-set with a hot, dry iron. After curing for 24 hours, it is hand washable and machine
washable.

As a Foil Adhesive
Brush or stencil Tackifier on the fabric surface. Allow to dry until clear. Cover adhesive
area with craft foil (shiny side up). Iron with a dry iron set on “cotton.” Allow to cool just
a few seconds, peel the clear film off, leaving the foil on the adhesive. The foiled fabric is
hand washable and air dry-able. Do not iron, do not dry-clean.

For use with composition gold/silver leaf, apply Tackifier on fabric or paper and allow it
to dry approximately 5 minutes. Place composition leaf on top, with shiny side up. Press
in place firmly with your fingers. Cover with a piece of paper or baking parchment and
press with a dry iron set on cotton. Brush excess away with a soft brush. Foiled fabric is
hand-washable and air-dryable. Do not iron; do not dry-clean.

Make-Your-Own Sticky Notes
Apply a strip of Tackifier on the wrong side of any paper surface. Allow Tackifier to
dry until clear; the paper is now repositionable.
